The problem
On a farm with thousands of cattle, every weighing, vaccination, birth and pen transfer was written into a notebook or a spreadsheet. A single wrong digit in an ear tag number left the statutory herd registry out of step, which carries a fine. Sending animals to the abattoir meant hours of matching paperwork, vet certificates and weighbridge tickets, and mixed-up records cost real money.
